Join us for an inspiring day with guest turner Elizabeth Weber (learn more), showcasing a range of turning and surface techniques that blend form, texture, and colour. Throughout the day, Elizabeth will guide us through several projects, each highlighting different aspects of her artistry and process.

  • Turning and Embellishing Boxes

Learn how Elizabeth approaches endgrain box turning, from roughing green wood blanks to refining a finished box. She’ll cover the key details—thickness, lid fit, and grain orientation—and share how she prepares boxes for surface embellishment, including layout strategies and tool choices.

  • Turning and Embellishing a Platter

Discover how to turn a platter with a clean, elegant ogee profile and why form matters. Elizabeth will explore the rim as a creative canvas, demonstrating carving, texturing, and painting to create scale-like effects that elevate the artistic impact of the piece.

  • Carving a Wave/Leaf Motif

See how natural elements can be interpreted and integrated into turned objects. Elizabeth will walk through layout strategies and carving methods, using rotary carvers and woodburners for surface embellishment, then bring color into the work with milk paint and discuss finishing options to complete and protect the piece.

  • Exploring Colors and Textures

Gain insight into adding texture and carving to any turned piece. Elizabeth will discuss design inspiration and storyboards, effective workholding for carving, and demonstrate colouring techniques with milk paint and acrylics, along with finishing approaches to achieve different visual effects.
