Full-Day Cake/Pastry Stand Workshop
We’re delighted to welcome Kimberly Winkle for a full-day, hands-on workshop devoted to designing, turning, and embellishing a footed cake/pastry stand. Kim is a nationally recognized turner and surface designer whose inventive use of milk paint, colour, and pattern has inspired makers across North America. Her work is celebrated for its lively forms, playful graphics, and the way she activates a surface through layered colour and mark-making.
This workshop gives participants the opportunity to work through Kim’s complete process - from developing a design, to spindle and faceplate turning to create the stand and exploring surface embellishment. The day blends practical turning skills with her energetic “From Drab to Pizzazz” approach to colour and pattern, offering a rare chance to learn directly from an artist whose work exemplifies the creative potential of contemporary woodturning.
Designing the Cake/Pastry Stand
Kim begins by explaining how to design a well-proportioned cake/pastry stand that captures the size, shape, and key transitions of the form.
Turning the Stand and Platter
Participants will turn their footed stands and platters using the designs they have created. Kim will demonstrate how to turn the stand (spindle turning) and the platter (faceplate work) at the lathe, to maintain proportions and form.
From Drab to Pizzazz: Surface Design & Embellishment
After turning, Kim will introduce a range of surface-design techniques that transform the stands from simple turned forms into lively, expressive pieces. Students will explore milk paint, coloured pencils, and other embellishment tools to bring personality, colour, and uniqueness to their work.
Form & Surface: Basic Design Considerations
Kim will discuss the design considerations that connect form and surface - how proportion, detail, colour, and mark-making work together to create engaging, well-resolved cake/pastry stands. These principles support not only this project but any future work involving turned forms and surface embellishment.
Why You Need to Attend
A hands-on workshop with Kimberly Winkle is a rare opportunity to learn directly from an artist whose work blends confident turning with bold, inventive surface design. Kim’s teaching style is energetic, generous, and deeply practical - she shares not only how she works, but why she makes the decisions she does.
Working alongside fellow turners, you’ll gain skills that extend far beyond cake/pastry stands: designing appealing forms, refining details at the lathe, and exploring surface embellishment with confidence. Whether you’re newer to turning or have years of experience, this workshop will expand your toolkit and spark new ideas.
You’ll leave with a cake/pastry stand, a deeper understanding of form and surface, and a set of techniques you can apply to countless future projects. Just as importantly, you’ll enjoy a full day of learning, conversation, and creative momentum within our guild community.
